Overton Spring Cup Champions 2016!!

Overton Spring Cup is a cup competition where each age grou has to contribute to a group points tally with the overall winners taking the trophy for the year.

Competition in the form of Overton RFC, Winchester RFC, Tadley Tigers, Fordingbridge RFC and Fareham Heathens meant a tough day for Celts at the end of a long season.

First game was against home favourites and Cup holders Overton RFC but the Celts were ready and burst into a 3-1 HT lead.Tries from Charlie Fisher, Jake Hoare and Thomas Hutchinson gave the Celts an unassailable lead as they powered on to win 4-3; a great start against some big boys!

Fordingbridge were next and out for revenge from Counties but an excellent attacking display saw Celts run out 6-5 winners with tries from Will Breeze and Austin Taverner demonstarting their speed up field. Celts defence needed to tighten up as we were scraping through each game.

Las game before lunch against Winchester saw us face some tough female opposition and we had to delve deep to find a way around a solid defence. Henry Hughes found space down the right and powered over twice to the joy of the fans! Owen Williams stretched his legs to go over in the corner but pick of the bunch was Daniel Walker running 35m down the touchline to score his first try! Superb stuff! Other tries from Charlie Fisher (2), Thomas Hutchinson, Jake Hoare saw Celts run out 9-4 winners.

After lunch we faced Tadley Tigers who had some great attacking players who were going to put our defence to the test. Although the Celts legs were tiring their tackling was strong enough to grind out a 3-3 draw.

Unbeaten going into game #5 against our old foes Fareham Heathens who fielded a strong side with lots of pace. The Celts defence was stretched to the limit with great consecutive tackles from Thomas Hutchinson backed up by Jamie Arnold and Malachai Dauya meant a tight game. A superb offload from Rufus Millar sent Jake Hoare on the charge but the Heathens defence was solid and they countered well gaining metres every chance. Harry Martin showed some excellent tackle technique and Thomas Dobson drove forward at every chance. Unfortunately the gas ran out and we lost our only match 5-4.

With the one defeat and one draw we came second in our group but that secured the Celts 3 Cup points to go into the group talley. With 15 group cup points G&FRFC were crowned Spring Cup Champions 2016! A superb team effort from everyone involved.
