About the team

Walking Rugby is the newest, and probably the most inclusive, rugby format to be played in a Gosport and Fareham shirt. Launched at the club in 2019 by Dougie leask, Martyn Webb, Tony Buckley and Chris Davis, we mainly aim at men and women age 40 and over.
Walking Rugby is attracting new members to the club from who have either retired through injury and at that age in life that they need to slow down. It also attracts those that have not played or thrown a rugby ball before. The sport is growing rapidly in popularity across the UK and Ireland as a non contact game aimed at the over-fifties. It’s a great form of exercise and, most importantly, lots of fun!
Walking doesn’t sound very energetic but we’ve discovered that even older players are still very competitive and will move just as fast as the Guidelines allow. It is excellent exercise, huge fun and can be played all year round.
Walking Rugby has a simple set of guidelines so it’s easy to learn whether you have played rugby before or not. As it is non contact teams of up to seven players are usually mixed and each half is played 7 mins each way. A tackle is made with two hands on the torso of the ball carrier that is required to pass immediately 3 seconds. A turnover results when the ball is dropped or goes out of play restarts are simply a free pass. A try is scored when the ball carrier walks over the opposition try line.
The Gosport and Fareham Walking Rugby team have already notched up some notable successes. In 2021 we played our first ever festival at Guildfordians. Both teams made it into the final only to lose by one try in each final. Saturday 30th April 2022 we took two teams to the Salisbury festival, gold team winning the festival and the blue team coming 7th out of ten teams.
We hold two training sessions a week all year round, at the rugby club on Saturday mornings from 10am and on Tuesday evenings at the rugby club during the winter we train in/b they dell under floodlights.
We are happy to offer a temporary home to players from other sections who are returning from injury and find walking rugby a useful and enjoyable route back to full fitness. New members are always very welcome, whatever your ability of rugby, experience or no experience.
We look forward to seeing you very soon!
