Breakdown was the key to success

This is the first match report of the season and its a positive one! Well done Celts on a terrific first away fixture of the year at Fareham Heathens.

A strong away contingent of 32 Celts turned up on a sunny Sunday morning in Fareham. We started early with some tackling practice to prepare the players for some competitive play.

It was well received by all the players who turned up early and all were well warmed up for the start of the session. 58 players in total made up a very busy session but the space on alternative pitches meant we could run some progressive games for most of the session.

The progressive games gave an opportunity to introduce the 3 core skills into the competitive game and we saw an obvious advantage. Celts early season training paid off with the players showing excellent skill in the ruck. Aidan Bones showing excellent poaching skills at the breakdown. Jaden showed he has grasped the distribution game well being part of the best move of the day when he spread the ball out wide with electric hands for William Breeze to score in the corner.

William Breeze showed excellent aggression and scored a hat-trick of tries in the final full contact games. Also showing good attacking strength were Oscar, Charlie Fisher, Jake Hoare, Oliver Smith, Henry Shaw and Morgan Clayton.

Over on the other pitch I saw Billy May showing some excellent game coaching with Thomas Hutchinson, Jack Harrison and Jake Hoare showing wonderful team work in attack.

In summary a very satisfying morning and it showed the players have been listening and the coaches have been able to get their message across.

Play of the day was awarded to Aidan Bones for an awesome breakaway before offloading to William Breeze to score in the corner.
Attack of the day was awarded to William Breeze for constant attacking threat and multiple tries.
Defence of the day was awarded to Harrison Bennett for solid defence work throughout.

Well done boys!!

A great big thank you to Celts sponsor Solent Fire Protection Services.

Thanks to all the parents bringing the children along and spending a couple of hours of your Sunday morning on the touchline. We can't do this without your support.

Talking of support I'd like to hear if any parent would like to get involved in the coaching of the squad? No experience necessary; just have a quick word with Caitlin Bones or Victoria Smith for more info. The Club can train you up with professional RFU courses of just a simple DBS check will suffice to start off.

We welcome Petersfield next week at home. Please come along to take part in what should be a great session.

Thanks again

Monty
