This weeks training report submitted by Cameron M

Hi lads,

First we had a warm-up, which included a lot of running, ready for the days training session which was a bit different than usual. Julian got us jogging five meters out and back, then slightly further out the next time always facing him. We then did something a bit more complex in our warm up; We ran out to Julian dropped to our chests, stood up, turned around, ran back to the line and dropped to our chests again. We had to go out to Julian and back to the line 8 times. By now we were really warm. We then did some more running in a running pyramid, which was a bit like shuttle runs. Thanks for a different kind of session Julian.
We then started some handling drills, which was different to the usual squares. We were working in groups of 3 with 2 of them standing still and 1 running. One of the people standing up held the ball and popped it off to the runner, who caught it and passed it backwards to the other member of the group. We then did passing under pressure with the tackle bags and a pudding which was done with 3 members of the squad. The first person passed the ball to the middle person, who was lined up in front of the tackle bags/pudding, and he had to pass the ball before making contact, which was about drawing the man. We then split into 2 groups of 8 with 6 of them being defenders, lined up. There was 1 man on the 22 metre line, 2 on the 10 metre line and 3 on the half-way line. This drill was the same as the previous drill; it was all about drawing the man. It was just to get a feel of what it would be like with a real person.
We then did some tackling on the tackle shields and the pudding. We went round in a rotation so we tackled on everything. Then Pony made tackling the pudding into a competition to see who could tackle the pudding the furthest. The key was the technique. Wide base to get low, head up, which will naturally straighten your back, look forward so you’re looking at where you are going to tackle (the shorts) and tackle upwards and drive the player backwards.
We then had a bit of fun with kicking.
Finally we went into a tag/rugby league style game. We did this to try out passing under pressure and drawing the man.
Congratulations to Midget for getting player of the day this week.

Well done to everybody who turned up to training and let’s use these skills we have learnt in our match against Fordingbridge.
