Game 1 v Oxford Harlequins Lost 2-1
Game 2 v Wimbourne Lost 2-1
Game 3 v Tadley Won 2-1
Semi Final v Reading Abbey Lost 1-0
On pitches that quickly became very slippery and cloggy fast running play was going to be challenging.
Oxford Harlequins used their large players well and missed tackles saw them score quickly, twice. Ravens began to play the conditions well and closed them down with tactical kicking from the repeated penalties awarded for high tackles. A perfect kick to the corner set up a free pass 3m out and Finlay Daley crashed over. Ravens battled for the equalizer but handling errors and failure to quickly secure the ball in the ruck saw them repeatedly turn the ball over. Oxford Harlequins went on to win there next 3 games by 6 scores in all games and made the final. Their coach commented later that other than the final their first game was the best game of the day.
Ravens then played Wimbourne and again missed tackles let them score first; but Ed Bell, Finlay Daly and Harry Rabjohn started to show the rest of the team how it should be done; Ethan Hammond, Joe Wilkinson and Aidan Jarvis began to solidify the defensive line. With good driving runs from Finlay and efforts to go around the defence from the backs Ravens dominated and were rewarded when Ed Bell crashed over. A lapse on concentration let Wimbourne snatch a win with a poorly defended quick penalty.
So if Ravens were to make a semi final they had to win their last Pool game against Tadley. They started with a much better shape but still turned over the ball too easily and let Tadley score first. Harry Rabjohn kept Ravens playing in Tadleys half and then crashed over for the equalizer.to make the chance of a win. Ravens then worked up field and Huw Bones broke from a maul and saw space in front of him, he sprinted to touch down in the corner. A period of tremendous defence where Ravens repulsed repeated Tadley attacks including an awesome turn over of a 3m penalty run by Tadleys biggest player. Finley and Ed stopped his run and Harry drove him backwards and to ground. Ravens secure the ball and closed out the game for a well deserved win.
3rd in their pool of 6 Ravens with 1 Win 2 Losses, but a try difference only only -1, Ravens drew Reading Abbey, the hosts, in the semi finals. With a pitch that had become a quagmire it was never going to be pretty and both sides struggled to put phases together. Ravens failed to protect the ball and gave it away too easily putting themselves under pressure which finally broke their defence allowing Abbey the only score of the game. Ed Bell went off injured as Ravens battled for the equalizer but just couldn't cross the line. Abbey went on to beat Oxford Harlequins in the final.
A lot for Ravens to take away from this day of rugby, not just piles of muddy kit and dirty equipment.
