Hi Saxons,
Well done for a strong performance on Sunday. We have not played Romsey since U10 when they beat us in the match and they have clearly continued to grow. They are an experienced squad with lots of strong ball carriers, runners and tacklers. The match was exciting end to end stuff, with Romsey applying the early pressure and scoring first, but the Saxons absorbed the pressure and then began to turn the tide by good proper tackling followed by counter-rucking, stealing the ball in the mauls and from tackled players on the ground.
When we had the ball, we were starting to move it two away and getting it out to the backs, but too often players were choosing to run inside lines back into the traffic and the arms of the waiting forwards. This was especially bad when there were players outside with overlaps calling for the ball. We need to lift our eyes slightly and see where the gaps and spaces are spot the overlaps. The score wa 20-20 at half time, with Jack and Ollie scoring for the Saxons. The pace slowed understandably in the second half but Saxons were able to secure more of the ball and edged Romsey out with 3 tries to 2. Jack, Harvey and Ollie scored a try a piece. Freddie F crossed the line in the final play but was prevented from grounding the ball, unlucky, good charging run. Try scorers were Jack (4), Ollie (2), Harvey (1) - well done!
The Saxons were hosted well by Romsey with an excellent meal and Jack was selected by Romsey as the Saxons Player of The Week, well done, some excellent tries and excellent tackles!
Next week we are away to Totton for a triangular fixture with Fordingbridge as well.
