The Saxons match in the autumn sunshine at Petersfield was their fourth of the season against the first for the host team. Petersfield requested 3 X 15 minute matches to enable them to try out different combinations from their squad. Due to illness and unavailability Saxons had a squad of 17.
With a fresh faced, reasonably fit, youthful looking referee taking charge for the first time this season, Saxons won the toss and opted to receive the kick off. This was quickly rewarded with a flowing backs move ending with an unconverted try. An early injury to the Saxons scrum half resulted in a quick reshuffle with the only backs reserve, however this player did really well despite not playing in his normal position.
The first two 15 minute periods were end to end with the lead changing ends on several occasions and after 30 mins the score was Saxons 29 Petersfield 26.
Despite leading ,the Saxons were quite often second best in the rucks with Petersfield aggressive in counter rucking what should have been safe Saxon ball for recycling.
Saxons pulled away in the last period with some really good team tries involving both forwards and backs. The match finished 48 (8 tries + 4 conversions) 31 (5 tries + 3 conversions).
The benefit of the Saxons having had previous matches was clear to see whilst Petersfield were trying out new and established players for the first time.
The Saxons had rectified the flat feeling of the previous week at Romsey to continue their fine start to the season.
As our American cousins would say the Saxons are 4 and 0 moving forward.
