The Saxons visited Portsmouth RFC in fine but cold conditions and played some really expansive rugby. Portsmouth missed early tackles and let the Saxons play their fast-flowing running, passing and off loading game, allowing the Saxons to make breaks and finish tries mainly through the wings. The first try went to Saxons Centre Rory Richardson, followed by James Diamond, Alfie Claridge, Rob Henderson, Andrew Gamble, Ben Brooker, Jake Mitchell, Tom Wilsonand Jamie Stephenson, who also kicked 9 conversions in an impressive kicking display. Portsmouth did apply pressure and were rewarded with two tries, one of which was converted.
The Portsmouth scrum was strong and their rucking was determined, pushing the Saxons off the ball several times, so it was noy always our way, but the quick ball the Saxons provided into space against weak tackles, allowed the Saxons to break through. Portsmouth are a good team and we look forward to hosting and working with them in the future.
