The Saxons and Heathens U15s have enjoyed a wonderful friendly rivalry since U8, where school and classroom mates have played fantastic rugby together, the fixture has always been marked by the great level of banter, camaraderie and competition between the teams.
Friday night was no exception, Fareham Heathens are a strong side and had a great plan. They smashed into the Saxons, disrupted our play, stole ball we had won and were awesome.
Early pressure on both sides lead to an early penalty kick which the Heathen No 10 took , 3-0
The first try went to Heathens, a half break and then a glimpse for the talented Heathens 10 and he scored. 10-0
A try by Rob Henderson settled some nerves and kept us in the game, but the Saxons were still not settled and working well together. The Heathens applied the pressure and powered over and were then converted by the Heathens awesome kicking No10; 17-7
The Saxons were up against it, nearly half time, Heathens 17, Saxons 7
The final phase of the first half saw Rob Henderson score again and the half finished Heathens 17 Gosport 14
The second half of the game could be described as perhaps the Saxons finest performance. The team were allowed to settle and then turned in some great team tries by Rob and then James Diamond who was outstandingly difficult to tackle. We then had wonderful Ollie working hard on the right side of the pitch to keep the ball alive, to suddenly appear on the left wing to finish an absolute blindingly fast and aggressive try up the left wing.
The Saxons didn't stop there, Jamie Stephenson caught a restart from his boot straps, looked up, ran, side stepped one and then decided to go for it, strength, open space and a massive smile got him through.. The Saxons then continued with breathtaking, fast flowing rugby involving the whole team to finish the match.
Both sides played brilliantly, it was a unique fixture and something special.
