For 25 minutes it was a very even game with Gosport and Fareham Ravens probably the better team, but too many mistakes were squandering possession. A loose kick then saw Basingstoke score the first try against the flow of play. Heads didn't go down and Ravens battled to the Basingstoke line. They crossed the line but were held up and then Ed Bell picked up at 8 from the ensuing scrum and scrambled the 5m to the line placing the ball with great awareness. Aidan Jarvis kicked the conversion and it was 7 - 5 at half time to Ravens.
Basingstoke used their bench well and rotated players with great effect and began to dominate as the Ravens pack went missing at rucks. They began to run in tries as tackles weren't made and soon Ravens knew the game was beyond them. Opportunities to attack were squandered with ineffective and wasteful kicks by the Ravens. Then suddenly it clicked and a gap was exploited and Ben Wheeler ran in from his own half; Harry Rabjohn converted to make the final score 20 - 14 to Basingstoke. Ravens again failed to secure possession and panicked on their line turning the ball over to Basingstoke who took the opportunity to score and convert making the final score 27 - 14 and denying Ravens a point from the game. Ravens made a desperate effort to try and get it back but kicked the ball away again and Basingstoke closed out the game kicking to touch.
A lot to work on for Ravens coaches and the players need to get a bit smarter about the game. Opportunity for every player to stand up for selection next week at Bournemouth, but first training on Wednesday.
