Saxons faced a confident Havant in the bright autumn sunshine in front of a large vociferous crowd.
With a good Wednesday night training and pre match build up what could possibly go wrong. It wasn't scripted but Saxons conceded a try within the first 90 seconds. Saxons proved though that they are now made of sterner stuff and within minutes hit back with a try of their own from a well worked move off of the back of the scrum. The game was then to swing back in Havants favour with another score before yet another try for Saxons this time converted to take the lead for the first time in the match. Despite Havant having the size and bulk in the forwards the Saxons had the upper hand in the scrums and pushing them back. As the match developed it became feisty with unnecessary off the ball aggression from Havant although Saxons never took a backward step. Strong control from the referee was required and duly carried out ably assisted by his touch judges. Havant went back in front with a penalty try after a high tackle by the Saxons. A further try by Havant put the visitors 10 points ahead with 15 minutes to go. Some tactical substitutions and fresh legs were sent on and slowly but surely the Saxons clawed their way level with two more hard worked tries. Havant threw everything they had at the Saxons but it was the Saxons who went closest to scoring with only some strong tackling by Havant preventing another Saxon try. With time almost up and the Saxons pressing hard for a try on the Havant line the referee awarded a penalty in front of the posts. The penalty kick was converted and the Saxons duly celebrated with a roar from the crowd.
A fantastic cup tie In which the Saxons played superbly well against a bigger and at times intimidating team and opposition crowd. To come back from behind 3 times in the match was a sign of how defiant the Saxons have become. The Saxons season moves on with the record of played 7 won 7.
The teams hard work is paying off.
