The Saxons welcomed Wallingford RFC U14 on a damp and blustery day at Hugin Park. A joint training session with refreshers on tackling, rucking and ball handling was carried out followed by the two forward packs coming together to work on scrummaging and getting used to the addition of the wing forwards. The session was beneficial to both teams as they prepared for the season ahead.
The match was split into four quarters, to allow all players to play and for coaches to make changes and coach. The first two quarters were really close with nothing to choose from between two combative and aggressive teams. The Saxons pulled away from the visitors in the third quarter and probably just edged the fourth quarter, who were probably feeling the effects of being on tour!
Worthy of note was the interplay between the Saxons back row and scrum halves, some pretty decent scrummaging and hard aggressive running from the Saxons back line. Also we had to kick goals which went very well considering the conditions the match was played in.
The day was played in excellent spirit, with both sides learning a lot and playing some good enjoyable rugby.
