And the Awards went to…

On Friday (9th August 2019), the Goddesses held their end season awards presentation night followed by a fundraiser event.

All the Goddesses were presented with trophies for being part of the team in the season of 2018/19. These were present to them by their Head Fitness Coach, Kevin Chambers and their Head Coach, Jamie Gerathy. In addition there were three special awards given out for Most Improved Player of the Season, the Player’s Player of the Season and the Coaches Player of the Season.

And the winners were Lily West won the Most Improved Player for 2018/19 season; Sorcha Caudery was voted Player’s Player of the Season by the other Goddesses; and Coaches Player of the Season went to the Goddesses Captain, Joanne Lewis.

Lily West is the youngest of the Goddesses at 14, and she won the award for her dedication to learn how to play as a team member; her ability to put great effort into the physical training element and proving a confident player in tournaments against much more experienced players on the opposition. Lily said “I am very proud to have won Most Improved Player of the season, and really wasn’t expecting it. I have tried my hardest and will continue to do so next season”. Lily’s mum, Tina West, whom is also a Gosport Goddesses added “Lily has worked hard to learn the game since she became a Goddess in April this year; having been a ballerina previously. She really deserves this award; and I am a very proud mum and Goddess".

Player’s Player of the Season is selected by the Goddesses themselves, and they vote for the player in the team they think has contributed the most to the teams effort throughout the season. The deserving winner Sorcha Caudery (aged 22) was given this award on Friday night; she was voted due to her commitment to the Goddesses in both training and tournaments; as well as social/club events; leading the team by example, as well as standing in as Captain and helping new players to the team. Sorcha said “I am very privileged to have won this award; it has brought tears to my eyes; and I most have done somethings right during the season. I didn’t expect, I am still in complete shock but a very nice surprise that the other Goddesses think that much of me”. All the Goddesses wish Sorcha well for the future as she is off to university next month to study physiotherapy, and she’s looking forward to getting into contact rugby.

The final award Coaches Player of the Season went to the Goddesses Captain, Joanne Lewis (aged 40). Joanne received this award from the Goddesses Coaching team due to the passionate she has shown throughout the season, her commitment to her team as Captain both on and off the pitch; the way she has come back from injuries to regain her fitness and lead the Goddesses in some great matches. Joanne also alongside other Goddesses has helped behind the scenes not just for the ladies team but the for the club as well. Joanne Lewis said “For once, I am speechless (which my Goddesses have found funny and noted it in their diaries); I had no idea about this award. I am really shocked; and proud that my coaches believe in me as the Captain of the Gosport Goddesses, which I am proud and excited to be continuing into next season. My amazing Goddesses voted me back as their Captain; and I will give them my all again this coming season."

Goddess Captain, Joanne Lewis then went onto present on behalf of all the Goddesses engraved glasses to the coaching team for all the hard work, dedication and commitment they have give the team throughout the season and during the off season.

After their Presentation part of the evening, the Goddesses had a fundraiser for their team to help with kit and travel expenses. They had a local band called Mechanical Animals playing which everyone enjoyed; for which all the Goddesses would like to give them a massive thank especially as they did this gig for free.

They held a huge raffle with lots of prizes donated to them; from a variety of family passes including the Diving Museum, the 17th Century Village to a Tour for Two at the Ringwood Brewery; to Gosport & Fareham Rugby Club branded items to various bottles of wine. The Goddesses would like to thank everyone - companies and individuals for all the donations they received. The Goddesses managed to raise over £240.

Kevin Chamber, Head Fitness Coach and Jamie Gerathy, Head Coach both agreed that the Goddesses have come far during last season, and that everyone in the team is excited about their next season which starts on Sunday 8th September at Andover.
