A team of 15 Saxons made the crossing on a lovely sunny day for our visit to Ventnor whose ground sits on top of the cliffs looking out across the channel,
Right from the start your attitude was great, warming up and running through some drills with the Vectis players and it is clear that you are learning the moves and thinking about how they relate to the game.
We have played Vectis since Under 8 and they have always played hard direct rugby with big ball carriers running straight lines and taking the ball into contact. They have previously had a lot of success against us as we lacked the strength, technique and confidence to fell or wrap up their big players. With a few individual exceptions we used to back away from the confrontation. That changed in the summer at the Isle of Wight Festival when we last met them and the same was true again on Sunday.
Now we work together as a team to tackle their big players and rip, ruck, maul and steal the ball off them. When we had the ball we would move it away to players coming on to the ball with pace who looked for options to pass or offload it. Everytime you had the ball something happened and you looked dangerous. We made breaks and supported them. Your rucking was good and the ball is being presented well.
You looked very assured on the ball and moved it into space and allowed Josh, Ollie (2), Jack and Alfie to run in the tries. Vectis rallied in the second half and came back to score two tries, but it was not enough
Next week we are playing at Romsey who I don't think we have played since U11 when they visited us and narrowly beat us. We will then be stepping up the gears and playing Totton the week after and then New Milton before our Cup game with Fordingbridge.
All to play for but your are right on track and playing some great rugby Saxons,
Well done Saxons
