A lovely, sunny autumnal morning saw the U14s arrive at Fareham Heathens for the first game of the season. The boys were looking forward to it - first match, nice weather, Fareham Heathens...it's always a good fixture. Unfortunately Heathens were a couple of players short. This did, however, mean that we were able to lend them a couple and give everyone a decent run out in their proper positions. A big thank you the boys who agreed to play for the opposition but don't get any ideas, red and black don't suit you!
As predicted it was a close game.
A hard fought passage of play with some excellent rucking saw Alex S take the ball over the line for the first score of the match. Neil followed suit with a lovely breakaway try 11 minutes later. All was going well ...and then Heathens scored their first right at the end of the first half.
The second half was more of the same. Some good rucking, a strong scrum and some nice passing between the backs with Neil again scoring in the corner just 5 minutes in. Heathens pulled back another try just 7 minutes later but Gosport and Fareham held on to their lead with two disallowed tries before the full time whistle.
Well done boys. Plenty of progress made, a few things to think about but, overall, a thoroughly good start to the season.
