Alton take the day, but plenty of room for optimism for Gosport & Fareham.

Alton & Gos both fielded incomplete teams at Gosport Park - the visitors having 14 while Gosport & Fareham only having 13 players due to late registrations & no show. From the start Gosport were in trouble in a match that only ever flowed in 1 direction. With a final score of 0 - 72 you'd think there wouldn't be much to sing about ... but ... Alton fielded a strong team against our development squad & after coming off the back of a heavy defeat to Portsmouth last weekend, had a point to prove.
from a Gos point of view, for a development squad of players, the commitment & intent were on show from the very first few minutes when Sam Hudson put in a tackle that made the whole dell shake against a player who had picked an excellent line & whose starting speed was close to mach 1. Sam took a few moments to get his bearings & got straight back into the action, defending like a demon through to the very end.
Other positives were a huge step up in performance from George Wyatt & Darren Jones (who should be very proud of this man of the match award with such strong contenders around him). Scott Craik went to great lengths to prove that his recent resurgence as a player is something he aims to keep up so a huge well done to him as well for his 'never say die' efforts today.
Behind the scrum, the captain for the day, battled courageously & although it was always going to be a touch day for a scrum half to shine, Tom did his utmost & stuck at it to the end. He was ably helped out by learning fly half Ben Angell who also had a very encouraging day in defence & also with the limited attacking options. Together, the new 9 & 10 combination appears to be maturing nicely.

All in all, a tough day with clear work to do, but encouraging signs.

The overriding message to all is that you need to get yourselves down to training as often as you can & do some fitness work outside of training sessions as well.
