Although the scoreline suggests otherwise, this was a much better performance from Gosport & Fareham who pushed Trojans hard for their victory. Gos were in desperate need of a tough game after their recent lacklustre performances and Trojans certainly provided the challenge. The home side were strong, well drilled and fully deserved their victory.
The game was split into three 20-minute periods which enabled Gos to be flexible with their team selections and systems, and also provided the scope to give all their players some game-time.
Gos started with their ‘league’ side and were under pressure right from the start. But Gos defended well and retained their determination, attitude and focus. This was reflected by their resolute response following an early try from Trojans. Gos were strong in the loose, tight in the rucks and looked to run the ball wide.
Craig Taylor, returning from injury, had a storming match and was well supported by his pack. Tom Batley was the steadying force in midfield and he led from the front with his decision-making and kicking. But overall it was good to see all the Gos players take the field and playing to an improved level.
