Colts put through team build drills by the police at their Training College near Netley.

The colts experienced what it takes to train police officers when dealing with public order as they donned protective gear and helmets.

We all turned up in two mini buses on a warm Sunday afternoon to the Police College, where we were introduced to Leigh, Colin and Mike who were to take session.
The warm up exercise quickly showed that this was going to be a challenging afternoon. Split into two teams, each team had a 20ft rope that each team had to run around the park keeping it taut and never to touch the ground, whilst negotiating obstacles along the way and changing on command how the rope was to be held. Some 25 mins later the two teams arrived back slightly shattered knowing that if that was the warm up what else was to come?
The group was split into 3 teams of 9, and each team did each of the 3 drills in a round robin.
Drill one involved a session in the gym and included doing a bleep test,
Drill two involved carrying a stretcher with a weighted dummy strapped to it, two carrying round riot shields and a heavy door battering ram. As a team they had a 500m run to get the stretcher and kit back to base, once back they then did a 500m run with 4ft riot shields, then a 500m run with round riot shields then finishing off with a straight 500m run.
Drill three, I think was everyone's favourite as they got to wear the black body armour kit and helmets. This involved doing a 500m run carrying 4ft riot shields, a ladder, a small red key, a large black 2 man ram and a rugby ball. (none of this equipment, apart from ladder was allowed to touch the ground). Once back from the run they entered the mock up street and had to get all themselves and equipment through a window followed by scaling a wall and getting everyone and equipment over the wall. Then in 3's, 2 carrying the riot shields and one the rugby ball they had to negotiate their way through a wall of hanging tyres and deliver the ball back to the next 3. Once all had negotiated the tyres it was a run to the mock up house where the equipment was stowed, except the rugby ball. 1st man in the house with ball ran up stairs to the window and passed ball to 2nd man and so on until all upstairs. Then back down to push an abandoned van the full length of the mock up street, about 120m.

All the guys enjoyed the experience and said they would never complain about Oz's Thursday training again

Huge thanks to Leigh from the police training public order unit for putting together the drills for us and doing this in his own time, as did Colin and Mike who assisted him.
The colts realised that for these drills to succeed, teamwork and good communication were essential, and as ever they did themselves and the Club they represent proud.
