Coaches and parents kept waiting until last 5 minutes.

The Saxons travelled to Romsey less than 48 hours after their entertaining and emphatic win over Fareham Heathens.
The team knew they were in for a hard match as last year the Saxons just won a close encounter 35-30.
Romsey appeared to be the physically bigger team and perhaps that combined with the fact that the Saxons had some fatigued players after the Heathens game appeared to have the edge in the early stages. The basic moves that were so successful against Heathens were not quite coming off. One small area of success was the scrum although this advantage was negated after the referee opted for uncontested scrums to provide safe play for the inexperienced Romsey front row. Even the Saxons normally resolute defence was being tested as wave after wave of Romsey attacks went in search of tries. Romsey had some success and scored two tries with one being converted. This left the Saxons 12-0 down with 15 mins to go and what appeared to be a slight lack of their normal high intensity and aggressive play. Finally, the team started to play as the coaching team and parents knew they were capable of and a try was scored after concerted play by the forwards which was also converted. Then in the final minute another break by the forwards was completed by great support play from the backs for a second try. As soon as this was successfully converted the referee blew the final whistle. The Saxons had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat which was possibly not expected after three quarters of the game. This proves the Saxons can dig in and graft out a result against the odds which will be necessary as the matches come thick and fast throughout the seasons. Well done for the victory but try and start matches strong and aggressive to enable the coaching team and parents to enjoy the match duration not just the last five minutes.
