Crunch time in the bottom of HRFU U15 Div 1 decider

'For once we didn't hit the self destruct button when we went behind, big lesson for the squad today'
- Arthur Rabjohn
A heavy muddy pitch at New Milton didn't appear to slow down the home team who with two tries in the first 10 minutes of the game looked like they were going to run away with it as Ravens failed to make telling tackles. However, after a determined piece of forward play Samuel Rushent broke free from a maul and crashed through the first defence line 30m out. He bounced and avoided the second defence and made the line to score under the posts giving Aidan Jarvis a simple kick for 7 points. New Milton weren't done and again poor tackling in the centre let them through and desperate last tackles couldn't stop them reaching the line. Half time 17-7 to New Milton.
The rain began to fall and Ravens forwards began to dominate and tackles were now being made. Euan Archbold crashed over but the conversion was missed and Ravens saw hope at 17-12. After a great series of phases and a break on the right touchline Ravens were on the New Milton line but an adjudge knock on took possession from them and in the ensuing tussle on the try line New Milton somehow broke free and ran the length of the pitch to score. 22-12 and it was again fractious behind the posts but for a change the team didn't hit the self destruct bottom. Riley Clarke had entered the fray and Johnnie Lewis arrived and the forwards were on the front foot. After a great running attack winger Tyler Joly managed to stay in field and although tackled in the corner managed to reach the line in one effort, a tremendous wingers try; 22-17 and the Ravens knew they had a chance and heads were still up. Ball through three phases was released to the backs and Tom Ellis crashed it up. The ball was recycled and Harry Rabjohn handed off the first tackler on the 22m, bounced the second and dragged the third over line to score, Aidan Jarvis converted to give Ravens a 24-22 lead with 10 minutes to go. New Milton came back from the kick-off but made little headway and when the ball was turned over Gosport progressed up the pitch with a series of forward drives and penalties. Harry Rabjohn shaped to kick a penalty to touch 15m out but at last minute tap kicked and reversed the direction passing to Euan Archbold who crashed through the tackles to score his second, the kick was missed and with 2 minutes to go Ravens sat on 7 point lead. Ravens secured the kick off and through several phases wound the game down in a controlled way that was absent in earlier games this season. Final score 29-22 to Gosport and Fareham in a very competitive game of rugby.
Ravens now await the outcome of HRFU League consideration to see if they get to stay up in Div 1.
