George Hillan reviews and previews

A very successful weekend for all teams associated to Gosport & Fareham Rugby club, culminating in a well organised and executed U12's tournament despite the unfavourable conditions.

Both the 1st and 2nd XV showed the fight and determination the coaching and management have witnessed throughout all pre-season. Saturday marked the start to our season, we took the lessons learnt from 2 very hard away fixtures and turned them around into the performance the players deserved. As we keep saying to the players we never look back, we always look forward, we cannot change history but we can write a new chapter.

As a coach it was very rewarding to see the teams implementing what we trained in the week building up to the fixtures. The difference from the Eastleigh fixture to the Farnham one was one of monumental proportions. Even in the wet and windy conditions the players stuck to their task and put their bodies on the line.

It was not the day for free flowing rugby, however when the opportunity was presented to the players, they spread the ball wide making Farnham’s defence work overtime. So we were able to mix the play up to maintain our time in possession of the ball.

As we go into this weekend’s fixtures, the teams will have more than travel disruptions to content with. The 1st XV travel to play an unbeaten Twickenham side, they have won 2 and drawn 1. We know we will have to maintain the standard we set last Saturday and develop in some areas; however we have trained well and are prepared as well as we can be. The self believe we gained last week will only assist in our aim to achieve our first away win of the season.
